The Big Tree Expedition
Hey there,
Hope you’re all staying warm this chilly January. We’ve had a cold snap here, and a bit of snowy flurries yesterday.
This little Kephart recently got to take a trip into the Sipsey Wilderness area in Alabama. This area has many hiking trails across thousands of acres of woods with creeks, waterfalls, and well…wilderness. 😉
The destination on this particular day was the Big Tree, reportedly the largest tree in Alabama. And that tree is big!! It’s a Yellow Poplar, approximately 150 feet tall, and it takes about 4 grown men to reach around it.
Just to give you a scale, that little Kephart has a foot-long handle. That’s a large timber right there! 😉
The Big Tree is nestled in a big hollow, surrounded by a variety of evergreen bushes and trees, as well as two tall waterfalls spilling over from the top of the ridge. There’s also a large rock overhang, which made for a great spot for a fire and lunch underneath.
And of course the Kephart got to do its job there.
It’s amazing how many places of beauty there are right in our backyard or just a short day trip away. This one was definitely worth it!
Hope you have a great week out there, and thanks for stopping by!
